"The Father made redemption depend on her. — How few realise all that follows from that consent of hers. Even Catholics in the main do not realise the importance of the part that Mary played." – Legion of Mary Handbook, Chapter 39.1 The reading highlights Mary's vital role in salvation history through her Fiat—her free, fully informed, and sinless "yes" to God—which marked the beginning of both the world's redemption and her sorrows. Being immaculately conceived, Mary experienced suffering more intensely and chose obedience without the burden of original sin.
Mary is often sidelined in modern efforts to be ecumenical, but the author argues this is a mistake. Scripture (Luke 1:48) prophesies that all generations will call her blessed, and failing to honour her neglects that prophecy. Mary is essential because Jesus is present where Mary is. As the Queen of Heaven, her intercessory power is unmatched, making our prayers more pleasing to God.
Therefore, Mary should be central in evangelisation and the work of the Legion of Mary, as she is the most necessary path to Jesus and, ultimately, to heaven.
